In this two-day workshop, Marci will lead us in hands-on surface techniques, then we’ll create three artist books with one story (a wire or stick-bound codex, an accordion X with pockets, and a side-sewn accordion with wrapped cover).

This is a total immersion into artist books that will give you an entirely new way of understanding book structures, visual storytelling, and how ideas and materials work together.

You will develop elements of the book—pace, pagination, time and space, and hidden/revealed content—through surface and structure of pages. New ideas will emerge through the interaction of concept and hands-on play.

Marci will provide a list of writing and art prompts for pre-workshop ideas. The take-home book and materials directions will support your making more successful books with your workshop skills.

Day One: Students will view models, discuss ideas, and learn together with demonstrations and focused techniques that generate text, image, and content. We will begin with one 22 x 30” sheet of paper and work with a variety of media and materials provided. Then we will create additional papers and combine with our own resources, including folding, tearing, and forming pockets.

Students will gain skills that include various pastepaper methods, gesso, collage, and mark-making. We will learn about page design and focusing our story through color selection. Bring materials that express your unique voice and interests: photos, sketches, journal pages, altered pages, photocopies, text, print proofs, “failed” art, thread, and fabric.

At the end of Day One you will have pages ready to make three books on Day Two.

Day Two: Students will use adhesive and non-adhesive methods with folding and sewing to assemble pages into three unique books. We will learn skills with pastes and glues; manipulate pages for story pace, placement, and dimension; and consider how an artist book “reads” with the interaction of picture, space, and words/no words for narrative.

Wire or Stick-Bound Codex: Exposed decorative spine, traditional page-turning with a contemporary structure that can hold secret pockets or framed information. Opportunity for textures, patterns, and shapes.

X Accordion: Flutter-type book that creates a central inside space and can have additional fold-out pages added or contrasted inner/secret and outer/public content. Play with sculptural reading of content.

Side-Sewn Accordion Spine: Decorative thread binding that can open for a simultaneous view of all content or turn as a codex. Pages can be “read” in multiple ways and layers. Information can be added or interchanged.

We will close the workshop by sharing, discussing, reviewing, and celebrating our books together.

Each day will include time to pause and share our learning experiences.

All skill levels are welcome in this supportive environment of playful learning and exchange of information, which will guide you to success in your art making. You will gain confidence to continue your artist books from the workshop. Questions? Contact Marci at marci.easterbrook@sfcc.edu.
