Learn the ancient Japanese art of momigami (moh-mee-GAH-mee) to transform ordinary paper into soft, durable, fabric-like material through konnyaku starch and kneading. You will leave the workshop with custom book cloth, a mixed-media scroll, and skills to continue creating.
Friday, February 27: Konnyaku Prep Class
Master the crucial first step: mix and prepare konnyaku paste so you’re confident and ready for Saturday. Covers setup, supplies, and the chemistry behind the technique. (This will be recorded and available for playback to enrolled students.)
Saturday, February 28: Learn the Momigami Process
Create pieces while learning the complete momigami process. Includes momigami prep & application, konnyaku, Q&A, papers (fine Japanese papers, marbled papers, collage paper, and more), transforming your papers, demonstration of momigami bookcloth applications, cover a book with momigami book cloth, introduction to the momigami scroll and why this material is perfect for mixed media, create momigami scroll (mixed media, drawing, painting, stitching), wrap up, and show and tell.
